Tealium, Ensighten or Google Tag Manager?

Reddit users opinions about the most popular TMS’s:

I’ve talked with Tealium a bit and considered purchasing at the point when we were spending a ton on Adwords. During most of the demo, I found myself saying “Oh yeah, I do that in GTM already like this…”. We moved away from Adwords a bit and since then don’t have as much of a need for them. Our biggest pain point was that we felt like the metrics didn’t line up across different sources as much as they should and wasn’t in a form that was as actionable as we’d like. They have a team to help clean up the data streams and unify them to have a single source of information that we could then load into our data analytics software that we have in-house. As we grow, we might end up using them, but right now we don’t have the resources to actually take advantage of the benefits.

They do have the ability to take things and push them into the data layer or to other sources. There are also some added bonus features like serving content contextually on the page based on visitor data (new vs returning, location, referral source, etc).

We got quoted at their base tier pricing of $900/month.

I work with Tealium all day as a software developer. I don’t recommend it. In fact, I really strongly recommend you not use it. It’s needlessly complex and takes forever to publish changes; I’ve worked with a lot of tag management systems – none of them are what I’d call “good,” but that’s more the tagging model itself – and Tealium is the worst.

Unless you’re talking a massive enterprise site, GTM is really all you need until your company is more familiar with tag management.

Since what they do has been covered, I will talk about my preference. I have used all three. In my experience, the only reason to choose Tealium or Ensighten is if you are a large enterprise, have specific security issues or multi-domain problems. It has a lot of features that can let you track additional data points without engaging a BI team or creating custom rules based on inbound data and behavior.

That said, GTM is radically cheaper and does everything 99.9% of the worlds sites will need. It can be configured and set up in minutes and requires no special training to use or maintain.
